Upper Mustang Luxury Tour Introduction

The Upper Mustang luxury tour takes you on an adventurous journey into the mystical world of Lo Manthang, the Last Forbidden Kingdom of Nepal. This remote, well-hidden region lies beyond the mighty peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

Upper Mustang is one of the most exclusive parts of the Himalayas in Nepal. The region's remoteness and restricted area permit requirement maintain the flow of travelers. So, even during the peak seasons, Upper Mustang is not as crowded as other trekking regions in Nepal.

Foreigners were banned from entering Upper Mustang for a long time and only partially opened in 1994 for low-impact tourism. To this date, Upper Mustang remains one of the most highly protected and preserved areas in Nepal. Traveling here is considered a privilege, and only a few get to have it.

If you have traveled in Nepal or have a general idea of what trekking regions in Nepal look like, the Upper Mustang is nothing of that sort. It is almost otherworldly.

Imagine vast meadows, wind-carved cliffs, deep gorges, ancient monasteries, forgotten caves, fortified villages, and arid landscapes. This is Upper Mustang, and traveling here is almost like traveling back in time.

An adventurous private jeep tour into the Himalayas' most mysterious and culturally preserved regions

When we think about the Himalayas, thoughts like remoteness, cold, inaccessibility, limited services, and small villages are common. However, in some parts of this great mountain range, culture is so rooted that we cannot even fathom it. Upper Mustang is a great example of that.

Upper Mustang was first opened to international tourists in 1991. Lo Manthang is the royal capital of Upper Mustang. Although time seems to stand still in this part of the world, the culture, faith, and beliefs of the locals have only thrived.

Locals are deeply connected to spiritual devotion. They still follow their centuries-old rituals, customs, and beliefs. There are numerous stupas, monasteries, mani walls, prayer flags, and chortens all around the region.

  • Jampa Lhakhang (Jampa Monastery), Thubchen Monastery, and Chode Monastery are the three main monasteries of Lo Manthang.
  • There is also Chhoser Cave (also known as sky caves).
  • Ghar Gompa, Luri Gompa, and Namgyal Gompa are a few other popular monasteries in Upper Mustang.

For Hindus, Muktinath Temple is an ancient Vishnu and Shakti temple. For Buddhists, Muktinath is the abode of bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.

Kali Gandaki Gorge:

The Kali Gandaki Gorge is a deep corridor between towering 8,000-meter peaks of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna I. The gorge is carved by the ancient Kali Gandaki River, which flows from the Tibetan plateau down through Mustang.

The Kali Gandaki Gorge is known as the deepest gorge in the world. You will drive through the gorge on your way to Kagbeni. The gorge is also an ancient salt trade route, and the holy Shaligram stones are found along its riverbed.

Quaint Upper Mustang villages:

You will explore many untouched, beautiful villages while traveling in Upper Mustang. All these villages present traditions and beliefs that have been passed down for generations.

You will explore many beautiful villages like Chhusang, Chele, Ghami, Tsarang, Dhakmar, Syangboche, Ghiling, etc. There will be unbelievable sights when you pass through these villages.

Lo Manthang:

Lo Manthang is the cultural and historical heart of Upper Mustang. The village sits at 3,800 meters and is known as the Walled City. In Lo Manthang, you will see the traditional life of the Loba people.

The village has narrow lanes, whitewashed mud-brick houses, prayer wheels, monasteries, and a very distinctive environment compared to the rest of Nepal. Lo Manthang was a long semi-independent monarchy within Nepal.

You will explore the Royal Palace known as Tashi Dyaphel in the local language. It is a four-story, whitewashed, mud-brick medieval building, constructed in 1380 by King Ame Pal.

Likewise, you will explore Thubchen Gompa, Jampa Lhakhang (God House), and Gompa in Lo Manthang. There are also bookstores, bakeries, souvenir shops, and the Amchi Clinic that you will visit.

Chhoser (Sky Caves):

Chhoser is a valley near Lo Manthang. It is famous for its sky caves. These are cave settlements carved into towering cliffs. These caves are the most fascinating archaeological element of the Upper Mustang.

The Chhoser caves are complex networks of chambers that were used for living, meditation, and religious purposes. The caves were carved by hand over 2,000 years ago.

Lo Gekar Monastery:

Lo Gekar Monastery, also popularly known as Ghar Gumba, is an ancient 8th-century Tibetan Buddhist monastery. It is situated at 3,920 meters and is believed to predate Samye Monastery in Tibet.

According to legend, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) is believed to have built Ghar Gompa. This monastery is one of the highly revered religious sites for locals.

Trans-Himalayan landscapes:

One of the biggest highlights of the Upper Mustang luxury jeep tour is the trans-Himalayan landscapes. Upper Mustang is a rainshadow area, which makes it semi-desert. Rain does not fall here.

The region only has hardy shrubs, dry alpine grasslands, and scantily scattered willow/juniper patches. You can see paddy, buckwheat, and potato fields.

The ridges and high cliffs have fierce, strong winds. And there are several mountain passes ranging between 3,800 meters and 4,000 meters. You will cross quite a few of them throughout the Upper Mustang luxury tour.

Kagbeni:

Kagbeni is a beautiful medieval village at 2,804 meters. It is a gateway to Upper Mustang. Barren hills and snow-covered mountains surround the village. There are narrow alleys, stone houses, and prayer wheels in the village. Locals follow centuries-old Tibetan Buddhist traditions.

Jomsom:

Jomsom connects Mustang with Pokhara via air. It is a lovely Himalayan town at 2,700 meters, surrounded by the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The famous Shinta Mani is located on a hillside above Jomsom. You will end the luxury Upper Mustang tour here and fly to Pokhara.

Pokhara:

You will have one full day in Pokhara before the tour starts and two days after the tour ends. Pokhara, the City of Lakes, will welcome you with high-end resorts and full relaxation.

It is a great city to explore, enjoy nature, and experience modern conveniences. Explore the bustle of Lakeside Market and experience kayaking on Phewa Lake. Similarly, enjoy a stay at the luxurious Hotel Sarangkot Mountain Lodge.

While in Sarangkot, you will catch a gorgeous sunrise over the Himalayan mountains. The city also has many fine dining, bakeries, and salons where you can enjoy incredible food and services.

Kathmandu:

You will have ample time in Kathmandu, too. We will take you on a guided sightseeing tour of Monkey Temple, Boudha Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple, and Patan Durbar Square.

Similarly, you will explore bustling local markets, try Nepalese delicacies, and go on a shopping spree. If you are interested in buying authentic pashmina, thangka paintings, jewellery, or anything else, we can suggest trusted artisans.

Best time for Upper Mustang luxury tour

The Upper Mustang luxury tour is available throughout the year. In fact, you can also do this tour in monsoon because Upper Mustang is a rainshadow area, so the region remains dry.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the peak travel times because of stable weather and pleasant climate. The road conditions are also great for an overland journey.

In summer/monsoon (June to August), you can face rainfall in Kathmandu and Pokhara, and while driving to Kalopani. Once you enter Upper Mustang, there is no issue with rainfall or muddy roads.

A Upper Mustang luxury tour in winter (December to February) is also possible. However, it is the coldest time of the year, so you have to be prepared for a very cold climate. If you want to skip crowds, winter is the best time for the Upper Mustang luxury tour.

Upper Mustang luxury tour during Tiji festival:

Tiji festival is the biggest annual celebration in Upper Mustang. In 2027, it will be celebrated from June 1st to June 3rd. It is a three-day festival that includes masked dances, ritual changes, colorful costumes, mandalas, offerings, etc. If you want to see and be part of the cultural extravaganza of Upper Mustang, travel to Lo Manthang during the Tiji festival.

Upper Mustang restricted area rules

Upper Mustang has always been a sensitive Himalayan border region with strong cultural and historical ties to Tibet. Controlled access to Upper Mustang allows the Nepal government to maintain border security and diplomacy.

Likewise, the archaeological, cultural, and historical significance of Upper Mustang is too high not to protect and preserve it. By keeping mass tourism away from the region, the government has successfully safeguarded Upper Mustang's roots.

Upper Mustang restricted area permit:

The restricted area permit costs USD 500 per person for the first 10 days, then USD 50 per person per day after that.

The permit applies to the designated restricted-area sections, including:

  • Lo-Ghekar Damodarkunda Rural Municipality – Wards 1–5
  • Baragung Muktichetra Rural Municipality – Ward 3 and Satang Village in Ward 5

Upper Mustang travel regulations for foreigners:

  • Foreigners can only enter Upper Mustang if their trip is organized by a local Nepali authorized travel company like First Himalayan Holidays.
  • They must be accompanied by a local Nepali trekking guide.
  • The minimum two-traveler requirement is no longer needed. So, solo travelers can also plan their luxury Upper Mustang tour freely.

We will handle all permit applications and the process for the Upper Mustang luxury tour. You do not have to worry about anything. Likewise, we will also provide the best licensed guide for the tour, along with a skilled driver who has experience on the Upper Mustang route.

Upper Mustang is one of the top destinations in the Himalayas for a luxury holiday. It has smooth road connections most of the way and a fantastic network of premium mountain lodges.

Although the region is untouched and boasts ancient Tibetan-influenced culture, privacy, exclusive hotels, comfort, and personalized services make Upper Mustang a sought-after remote luxury destination.

The Upper Mustang luxury tour 12 days is suitable for:

  • Couples and honeymooners looking for a private, unconventional luxury Himalayan escape.
  • It is a great family trip suitable for members. There is comfort, ease, adventure, and cultural encounters.
  • Senior travelers looking for an easy trip in the Himalayas. The Upper Mustang luxury tour does not include any major hiking or physical strain. Elevation gain is also manageable.

The Upper Mustang luxury tour is an overland trip, so there is no challenging hiking. You will travel in a luxury off-road vehicle that is designed to provide a comfortable ride on rugged terrain.

There will be light walking around villages and monasteries, which will not be tough in any way. The only challenge anyone can have on the Upper Mustang luxury tour is the long drive from one destination to another.

If you have motion sickness and do not find long car drives easy, the Upper Mustang luxury tour can be a bit challenging for your body. You are recommended to have motion sickness medicine. Likewise, we can customize frequent short breaks along the way to make the journey easy for you.

Similarly, you will stay under 4,000 meters on the Upper Mustang luxury tour. The elevation gain is not significant, so with proper precaution and acclimatisation, you can complete the tour without altitude sickness worries.

High altitude precautions and tips:

  • Be aware of early signs of altitude sickness, which are fatigue, headache, dizziness, nausea, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, and breathlessness.
  • Keep yourself hydrated. Soups and ginger-honey teas are great to cure high-altitude blues.
  • Have carbohydrate-rich food and get ample rest.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol.

Travel insurance

We highly recommend travel insurance because, at the end of the day, Upper Mustang is a remote destination with very limited medical facilities. Similarly, there are risks of altitude sickness, road closures, etc.

Travel insurance covering helicopter evacuation and medical bills is a must for the Upper Mustang luxury tour. It allows you to receive immediate rescue and medical assistance during distress.

Food and drinks

On the Upper Mustang luxury tour, you will enjoy traditional Nepali cuisine blended with Tibetan and Himalayan cuisine. In Kathmandu and Pokhara, you will find cuisine from all around the world. While in the mountains, you will have noodles, soups, rice, veggies, etc.

Some local dishes that we highly recommend having are dal bhat, thukpa, sya phaley, Tibetan bread, butter tea, momo, etc. Similarly, you will also find burgers, French fries, pasta, etc. Clean drinking water, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, local wine, etc, will also be available everywhere.

Connectivity during the tour

Upper Mustang is a remote region with limited mobile and WiFi connectivity. Mobile networks are available in many places, but the network is not consistent throughout the region. Similarly, you can get a WiFi connection in lodges by paying a few extra bucks.

Charging facilities

Charging facilities are available throughout the tour. For backup, carry a power bank and spare batteries.
