Best time to do the Bhutan Nepal luxury tour (detailed seasonal guide)

March to May (spring) and September to November (autumn) are the best times to enjoy a luxury tour in Bhutan and Nepal.

You can also do this tour in winter (December to February) and summer/monsoon (June to August). But these seasons have unstable weather in the Himalayas, so some modifications will be needed in the itinerary.

Spring (March to May) - Best season for clear weather + comfortable climate

➤ Why spring is an excellent time for a luxury tour:

  • Stable weather windows for mountain views in both Bhutan and Nepal.
  • Comfortable temperatures for walking (cool mornings, mild afternoons).
  • Rhododendron bloom begins in many mid-hill regions (especially Nepal).

➤ What to expect:

  • Crisp visibility (best chance to see big peaks on heli tour days).
  • Pleasant Punakha warmth and cooler Phobjikha Valley nights at 3,000 m.
  • Autumn (September to November) - Best for sharp mountain visibility + festival season both in Bhutan and Nepal

➤ Why autumn is an excellent time for a luxury tour:

  • Post-monsoon clarity means dramatic Himalayan panoramas.
  • Comfortable trekking temperatures- low rainfall and great photography opportunity.
  • Major festivals in Bhutan and Nepal fall in the autumn season (exact dates vary).

➤ What to expect:

Excellent conditions for the Mustang tour (dry trans-Himalayan landscapes).

Busy season: luxury lodges should be reserved well in advance.

  • Winter (December to February) - Beautiful landscape but cold climate, adjustments are required for some routes
  • In winter, the weather is not that stable. So, we have to adjust the itinerary accordingly.

*Phobjikha Valley is known for the black-necked cranes that migrate between October and February.

➤ Why you might still choose winter:

  • Crystal-clear air on many days.
  • Magical winter landscapes.
  • Peaceful journey and cozy lodge ambiance.

➤ Cons of winter traveling:

  • Cold nights at higher elevations (Phobjikha Valley and Mustang).
  • Occasional weather delays for flights/helicopters.
  • Shorter daylight.

Monsoon/summer (June to August) - Generally not recommended for this exact Bhutan Nepal luxury tour itinerary

Very unpredictable weather and frequent rainfall affect the tour. Historical sites, museums, and temples may be closed. Slippery and wet conditions can make the tour bothersome.

➤ Why is the monsoon a challenging time for tour:

Nepal monsoon brings heavy rain, cloud cover, and flight disruptions.

Reduced mountain visibility and leeches/muddy trails in lower elevations.

➤ Pros:

Mustang sits in a rain-shadow area, so rainfall does not affect the region. However, the proposed 19-day itinerary has to be adjusted according to the weather.
