Pre-trip preparations for Your Signature Himalayan Journey

If you have set your mind to do the luxury Bhutan Everest Base Camp trek, start preparing early. It will make sure you are ready for the journey and do not miss anything.

Physical preparation:

Tour in Bhutan is easy. It only involves light walking across historical sites and markets. However, trekking to Everest Base Camp is challenging. Even if you do the trek in luxury style, the daily 6 hours of hiking and high-altitude challenge do not go away.

  • Exercise regularly for at least 2-3 months before your trip.
  • Focus on improving your stamina, strength, and endurance.
  • Stay consistent with regular long walks with a 5 kg backpack.

Health and well-being:

  • Consult your doctor about high-altitude trekking.
  • Pack your personal medication and a light, personal first-aid kit.

Mental preparation:

  • Understand the journey and have a positive mindset towards local culture, lifestyle, and practices.
  • Be open to local flavors and experiences.
  • Trekking in the Himalayas brings discomfort, or what we say, adventure. You have to be flexible, patient, and determined.

Packing:

Bring your normal clothes and fancy pieces. They are great for sightseeing and city tours. However, you will need appropriate clothes for trekking in the Himalayas.

  • Pack a comfortable pair of walking shoes to wear during sightseeing.
  • You can buy excellent-quality trekking clothes and gear in Kathmandu. So, you do not need to bring everything from your home.
  • Get your trekking boots early and get used to them before the trek begins to avoid blisters while hiking.

Travel documents and visas

You will need the following documents for the luxury Bhutan tour and the Everest Base Camp trek:

  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the day you enter Nepal
  •  Handful of passport-sized photos

We will take care of the Bhutan tourist visa and travel permits. Likewise, Everest Base Camp trek permits are also handled by us. All the involved fees are included in our package cost.

However, travelers have to get a Nepal travel visa on their own. It is easy and can be obtained upon arriving at Kathmandu Airport. Citizens of some countries are not eligible for an on-arrival Nepal travel visa. Check more details on the official government site of Nepal.

Travel insurance

You need comprehensive travel insurance for the Everest Base Camp trek. It should cover helicopter evacuation up to 5,500 meters and medical bills. You can also cover trip cancellation, baggage loss, etc, in your travel insurance.

Accommodation

In Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, and Kathmandu, you will stay at 5-star hotels or resorts. We will get you the best properties in these cities.

During trekking to Everest Base Camp, you will stay at the finest, luxury mountain lodges in Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Deboche, and Dingboche villages. Private rooms with ensuite bathrooms, hot running water, balconies, and many other high-end amenities will be available.

In Lobuche village and Gorak Shep, we book the best available lodge because there is no luxury lodge.

Dining experience and drinking water

In cities like Kathmandu and Thimphu, you will get cuisines from all around the world. We highly recommend tasting local flavors as it will enhance your journey.

During trekking, you will have a limited but excellent variety of food. In the mountains, all vegetables and ingredients are locally sourced and organic.

Safe drinking water is also available throughout the trail. So, you do not have to worry about anything. Similarly, fruit juice, tea, coffee, and soft beverages will also be available.

Altitude and comfort

The luxury Bhutan Everest Base Camp trek is a high-altitude journey that will take you to 5,545 meters above sea level. Likewise, while traveling in Bhutan, you will be 2,000 meters above sea level.

Especially during the EBC trek, you will face major high altitude challenges that include the risk of altitude sickness and a constantly changing environment and oxygen level.

So, it can be uncomfortable. What we have done is include two acclimatization breaks in our EBC trek itinerary and maintain a slow pace. So, you will have ample time to rest and recover, too.

Challenges during the trek

Trekking to Everest Base Camp is the main challenging part of this 18-day trip. You hike on average 5 to 6 hours a day for 9 days continuously. The trail ascends and descends, and the terrain is rugged, steep, and rocky.

In addition, high altitude and varying climate make trekking more challenging. These challenges can be overcome if you are fit and mountain-ready.

Connectivity and power

WiFi and mobile networks are widely available in Bhutan and Kathmandu. In lower trekking areas, you will get WiFi service in the lodges. The mobile network also works decently.

Similarly, there will be no issue with power outages in cities. During trekking, you will have power slots in your room where you can charge your devices. We recommend having backup, such as spare batteries and a power bank.

Currency and payments

You have to use local currencies in Nepal and Bhutan. There are money exchange centers and banks in all cities you will be visiting. You can use credit cards at big outlets and restaurants, but while shopping from local vendors, cash will be needed.

Best time and weather in the Himalayas

You can do the luxury Bhutan tour with Everest Base Camp trek throughout the year. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times for this trip because of stable weather, excellent visibility, and moderate climate in both countries.

Spring and autumn are also great times for trekking to Everest Base Camp. Winter (December to February) is also a good time for a luxury Bhutan tour with the EBC trek, but it will be the coldest time of the year.

So, you have to be well-packed. The EBC trail is also peaceful in winter, which is great if you want empty trails and tranquility. Summer/monsoon (June to August) is the most unstable time in the Himalayas.

Although you can enjoy a tour in Kathmandu and Bhutan, trekking to Everest Base Camp will be quite challenging. The helicopter flights are very affected due to unstable weather, and the trails below Tengboche village are highly affected due to heavy rainfall.

Baggage and trek support

Our team will assist you with your luggage during airport transfers. Likewise, during trekking, our porter will carry your duffel bag. You will only carry a light backpack (up to 5 kg).

Our Bhutanese team will take care of you while exploring Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha. They will introduce you to the Bhutanese culture, history, architecture, and flavors.

In Nepal, our Nepalese team will be there for you. We provide a professional, English-speaking trekking guide. He will accompany you during the trek along with a porter.

Cultural considerations

Nepal and Bhutan are both culturally very rich destinations. Locals from both these countries are deeply rooted in their faiths and spirituality.

There are certain etiquettes when you visit religious places. Respectful dress and good behavior are common courtesy.

There will be many things, practices, and beliefs that will be weird or unique to you. It's fine. Do not be hateful towards them.
